If you have a green house or other way of keeping them warm you can start earlier. Some folks seem to start them way early, but the truth is they get pretty spindly under grow lights if you keep them too long and they tend to catch up really quickly when put outdoors if the weather is at least around 80 during the day. If you make your rows slanted facing south \ rather than like ^ the ground will warm faster. Using black plastic on the ground helps warm the soil too.
