I am well pleased with Baccto potting soil. It comes in 2 varieties here and the second may be called Lite. Haven't used it but once and it is supposed to be for starting seeds. Baccto regular is jet black, heavy and mixed with some pearlite. It is very rich and has no trash in it, which is what I call big dry clumps of peat moss, sticks, and SAWDUST. I think the lite may have had some sand in it too. I mix 3-4 big plastic drink cups of Baccto with 1 of sand and 1 of vermiculite in a big mixing bowl. I have never had any plants die from damping off or anything else since I have been using it for the past 4 yrs. Then I transplant the seedlings into 20 oz. styrofoam cups. I use some sand in the bottom 1/4 of the cup to keep from having to use so much potting soil which is fairly expensive, and we have a big sand pile. If you don't plant them with soil to the top, you can add more, like 3/4" at the top when they have grown a couple of weeks. This is great for tomatoes because they put out more roots. I think peppers may do that too.
