When you live in a dry climate and place them close together it might not be necessary. Howver, it is quite rainy here and windy and I always stake mine. It was so muddy one year the plant, stake and all blew or fell over after a heavy rain. Someone gave me a bunch of tomato cages and I use the really big ones for the larger plants like ancho and NM 6/4, etc. and the smaller ones for the smaller varieties. works great but you do have to train them to grow up thru the rings. This also helps keep the deer from eating them!
