You can attract "good" bugs to your garden. Adult ladybird beetles
(ladybugs, red ladies) as well as green lacewings can be attracted (and
kept happy) by spraying a sugar solution around your garden, not
necessarily on the plants you want them on, but that is o.k. too.
Make a solution of 1 part sugar to 6 parts water, make sure the sugar
is completely dissolved.
Get a spray bottle that has the finest spray you can find (the
adjustable ones) so you can mist the solution onto the plants. Do this
early in the morning as these helpful "bugs" are most active during
the day.
Also get some bright red/orange plastic (I got a file folder this color
at Staples) Cut it into strips and hang it around the plants. This
also has the benefit of scaring birds away.
