I don't know whether the La Bambas in Champaign-Urbana was the first or not, but one of its Big-as-your-head Burritos was great on a cold winter's day after teaching freshman English. It went in in the early 90s, and like the one in Columbus, has a mural depicting the U of I football team. On the same note, Portland Oregon used to have a similar restaurant in NW Portland in the mid-70s: big soft-shell burritos with lots of condiments to pile on. I believe it was called Heavy-Number Taco and was located in an old gas station. Does anyone remember this? It was the only one of its kind (in Portland, Oregon) at the time. And in the University District in Seattle, there used to be one across from the Safeway on University Avenue in the late seventies. Same idea, and a place I frequently stopped at after class. Anyone remember its name? Now, in Portland at least, you can get soft-shelled burritos all over the place. Those at the mobile stands set up in empty parking lots are often especially good, and fiery if you want. Little Taco
