There are quite a few cats in this area that seem to find my compost containers, raised beds and potted plants irrestible. I buy mothballs (camphor) in large bags (a local clothes-cleaner sells them to me) - toss a handful or 2 in each compost container, sprinkle them in my raised beds and around the potted plants. (often looks like hail, even in mid-summer). The cats that I have seen in the garden usually leave abruptly after sniffing at the mothball treated dirt. I replace them about every 2 -4 months or so as they do lose potency with being exposed, depending on the temperature and/or amount of rain ( zero most years from Spring to Fall) and also the amount of wind - 30-40 mph winds tend to pile them up at one side of the raised beds. This treatment may not work as well if you live in an area that gets lots of rain as heavy rain tends to bury the mothball in soil. My dogs ignore the mothballs that end up in the grassy areas. -- Andie Paysinger & the PENDRAGON Basenjis,Teafer,Cheesy,Singer & Player asenji@earthlink.net So. Calif.
