I have a lot of room in my garden and space my plants in a 2' x 2' pattern. This is about as close as you can get and still have room to move around the mature plants. Even then you still have to maneuver carefully. You can certainly space them much close together, but you might want to leave a skip row every 2 rows to aid with harvesting. It also seems that pods will ripen faster when they get more direct sunlight.
