Pods, In another foray into a Cleveland-area Russian delicatessen (Overseas Grocer, Mayfield Heights) I found another sauce I've never seen before. The name is Kemali, and I'm wondering whether that's a brand name or a type of sauce. There is no country of origin listed, only World Taste, Inc. The flavor is not very hot, sort of like tomato paste with a little bit of an attitude. It would go well with seafood, or maybe in a chicken casserole. Ingredients: concentrated crushed tomatoes, water, vinegar, sugar, salt, red chili, spices, herbs and garlic powder. I like their label verbiage: "Spice up any food! Enjoy culinary arts using our Kemali sauce as Zesta for home-made meat and seafood." "Popular in Europe and around the world. Our delightful, refreshing, spicy sauce will renew your energy and will make you feel young..." At the same deli, I bought a plastic jar of Bende brand "hot kalocsai paprika" (from the Bende & Sons Salami Co.). "From the famous paprika producing region of Hungary." Pardon my lack of the correct character set, but can anyone translate: KIVALOAN SZINEZO HAZI JELLEGO? An initial test detonation on a Reuben sandwich showed this to be not too hot, but WOW what a wonderful, red pepper aroma. It can make a chilehead's eyes roll, and the only word that can be uttered is a passionate "Unnghh." No kvass at this place, though.
