> I am most definitely sold on raised-beds. I have used raised beds with great success for most of my (lengthy) adult life. Love the comfort, convenience, and control. The raised beds warm quickly in the spring, hold in moisture for the plants that love mucky soil (lettuce, basil), and develop superb tillage (tilth, Byron). Unlike Scott's timbers, I have come around to using twelve foot 2x10's, two boards high. It's best to start one board up (or deep) with posts in corners. My two beds are 12' x 5'. You will find yourself making your own soil as you get into this, you can add commercial stuff as Scott did, you can compost directly in the beds, cover the beds with (vegetable) kitchen scraps, amend the soil and have it stay amended for a while. I experimented with square foot gardening but much prefer Ruth Stout's mulch, mulch, mulch No Work Garden - ing. Worms abound, production is high, but (alas) this is my first year with Chiles, so I can't say how they'll react, but I expect pleasant surprises. Any other info, send an off-list E and I'll be happy to share experiences. Gareth the ChileKnight
