David, My best results come from transplanting "leggy" stock only a "little" deeper than in the pot. Obviously, if the plants are leaning from legginess, put 'em in deep enough to help them stay upright. They may be nightshades, but they ain't tomatoes (got that Dan Quayle?). Resist the urge to dunk 'em deep. Just say noe. Chet Bacon in CT and Byron B in the granite pile have their plants sucking up direct northern sun awready, as do I. You might try "in pot" sunshine for a while before setting out. Gareth
