We had the opportunity to eat at Cactus Pete's Mexican restaurant on Main
St. in Lake Placid, NY this weekend. I ordered the Mexican pizza. I
noticed a line on the bottom of the menu letting me know they'd be proud to
serve anything with either jalapenos, serranos, or habs. Salivating, I
asked for a mixture of serranos and habs on my pizza.

The waitress returned with a nice bowl of amazingly fruity and delicious
chopped habs and jals (out of serranos). She explained that the chef was
afraid to put the peppers on my pizza, that they might be too hot. The
boyfriend chuckled that he doubted that was possible in my case (he's seen
me beg for spice only to be disappointed before), but we appreciated the
safety. The habs were so good that I had to ask where they came from. I
hadn't had fresh habs that good in upstate NY ever. Apparently the chef
orders tham from Mexico and they take 6 weeks to come, but he is trying now
to grow his own. I'll bet he was surprised when the bowl came back empty!
I probably could have eaten more, they were so good. Now I am really sorry
I'm not growing habs this year.

Interesting chips and salsa...there were apples & red onions in the salsa
which is usually not my thing but it was good. Especially with added fresh
peppers. The boyfriend had the beef tacos and they were decent, but better
with the fresh peppers (what isn't?). Margaritas were about average.
Prices were pretty good, especially by Lake Placid standards. My 12-inch
mexican Pizza (which was supposed to be an appetizer) was about $6. The
tacos were probably about the same. They have outside dining which is a big
bonus.
