Now I write down ingredients when making something unusual (still pretty bad about those things I consider common items). If it doesn't turn out, throw away the notes or keep them in a different file (that way you'll know not to try that particular combination again). Husband and I have also taken to marking up our cookbooks each time we try a new recipe. Note any changes you made to the recipe. Note whether you liked it or not - and what it was you want to change if you are going to try it again but with alterations. We even note the date we first tried the recipe.
