lukasz wrote about police OC spray training in Oz... <<...Cap spray. The Brand was M.K. first alert, {non toxic-vegetable based according to the trainer}.>> A lot of the OC sprays out there contain isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol as a carrier - not quite as friendly as veggie oil. My favorite brand uses a inert fluorocarbon propellant/solvent carrier. It's the same carrier as is used in asthma inhalers. Just don't get the canisters confused! <<The officers who were sprayed were washed off with detergent, water and saline solution. Now as any good Chile-Head knows this doesn't work really all that well. ...snip... A 20 minute recovery time was also quoted.>> A local police academy here in Dayton, Ohio uses Dawn dishwashing soap to help remove the majority of the OC oil from trainees' faces. All I ever do as a volunteer paramedic (in my copious free time) is rinse peoples's faces with lotsa water - hoses work real nice. That, fresh air, and maybe cool dishcloths on the face till it wears off is all you can do. The better brands of OC will put someone down for more than 20 minutes - more like 45 or so. There are some brands of OC "neutralizer" out there for speeding up the recovery process, but they don't work worth kaka (a medical term, sorry). <<I was wondering if anybody on the list knew if this cap spray was any worse than getting a face full of Daves Insanity.>> Unfortunately (or fortunately if that's what turns you on), most good OC sprays run well over 1 Million SHU. If memory of the Mo Hotta Mo Betta catalog serves me, Dave's Insanity Sauce runs ~60,000SHU. Pure Cap is 500,000SHU. My favorite brand of OC (carried in a small canister "accidently" in my pocket on medic duty) runs 2 Million SHU. While I can't speak for the heat rating of M.K. First Alert, I think I'd really rather avoid getting nuked in the face with either Dave's or an OC spray. For those masochism tango lovers out there, my OC instructor told me that Bodyguard OC spray (no commercial interest, blah blah blah) is USP grade OC in the inert carrier. He's heard of some extreme people out there who'll empty a 2 ounce canister in a pot of chile. Sounds a bit toasty! Jeff Johnson
