Can't resist adding yet another possibility to the pot: They sound like Mexican bean beetles to me. Their larvae look like little yellow prickly-fuzzy things, so if you've seen anything hanging around that looks like that, consider it a clue. They are very nasty to green beans; they eat their leaves in such a way that nothing is left of them except their skeletal structure. Quite sad.
