I think that my previous post was mailed to the wrong address (the result of years mostly spent limiting my participation to lurking.) I would be interested in knowing if there actually are any other members of the list within a reasonable radius of NYC since the comments that I have been reading over the years seem to indicate that people are writing from everywhere in the world except here (center of the universe in many respects, but not when it comes to hot stuff, at least the edible Southwestern kind.) If anybody plans on attending the ChiliFest, you can mail me at <punto@inch.com> or <phirsch@nypl.org> Peter Hirsch (Still wondering what made a particular lunch at a tiny Laotian restaurant in Paris 7 or 8 years ago so searingly memorable) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hot Art Exhibition Kicks Off Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Chili Pepper Fiesta BROOKLYN, NY -- The Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery will heat up from September 26 through October 25 with a dramatic selection of color-filled oil paintings of chili peppers by Marcy Wasserman. Through Ms. Wasserman's exhibition, visitors can see that the chili peppers are as diverse and intriguing as the cultures which use them. The exhibition is comprised of 29 vivid pieces which will be on display as the Garden gets ready for its 6th Annual Chili Pepper Fiesta on Sunday, October 4. The show is located in the Garden's art gallery and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. These works capture the diversity and fiery zest of capsicum -- the hot pepper plant genus. The paintings depict fruits and vegetables, arranged in tableau or singly, sometimes with microscopic attention to their topography; as if they were a landscape, sometimes surreal, and often in subtle combinations. Presented in the tradition of the Spanish Bodega paintings of Velazquez and Zurbaran, the pieces are suited for display in both an art gallery or in the home. All paintings will be available for sale. The exhibition kicks off the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Chili Pepper Fiesta that takes place on Sunday, October 4th. A day-long celebration of many of the cultures which use and grow chili peppers, the Chili Pepper Fiesta features food, music, dance and, of course, arts and crafts. In addition, you will have an opportunity to meet Ms. Wasserman in the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery from 2 to 4 p.m. Ms. Wasserman's paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the Northeast, including the Bronx Museum, Westbeth Gallery, Ernest Rubenstein Gallery, Prince Street Gallery, Plaza Gallery at Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Life Gallery. In addition, she has exhibited in numerous galleries in the New England area including Cyvia Gallery, Carlson Gallery, Wave Gallery, Habitat and Brattle House. The recipient of three Polaroid Foundation Grants, she received her BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and an MS from the University of Bridgeport. The standard adult admission (17 and older) is $3.00; the fee for adults 65 and over and students with valid ID is $1.50; and the fee for children (6 to 16) is $.50. Children (5 and under), all school groups, Community Pass holders and Garden Members are admitted free. The Garden is located at 900 Washington Avenue and is easily accessible by public transportation. By subway take the 2 or 3 train to Eastern Parkway or the D or Q train to Prospect Park. By bus use the B41, B47, B48 or B71. For more information about the Garden call (718) 622-4433 or visit our web site at www.bbg.org. Brooklyn Botanic Garden To Heat Up In October With Siixth Annual "Chili Pepper Fiesta" BROOKLYN, NY -- Join Brooklyn Botanic Garden Oct. 4 to celebrate the chili pepper -- a fruit with international appeal. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., music, dance, crafts, workshops and even food will revolve around the chili pepper, or should we say chili peppers! The Chili Pepper Fiesta is an opportunity for families to see how chili peppers are grown and harvested and to learn about the people who use them. Why all the fuss about chili peppers? Because from restaurants to fashion boutiques, chili peppers are hot in more ways than one. They are culinary wonders and are pictured on everything from calendars to clothes. There are many different varieties of chili peppers. Some are hot, some mild; some are green or red, of course, and some are even purple. Here at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the chili pepper growing beds in the Children's Garden contain Crimson Hot, Thai Dragon, Whitefire, Arizona Toothpick, Scotch Bonnets -- the hottest of the hot -- and more. In total, there are 18 varieties! These peppers will be both on view and sale at the Fiesta. Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Chili Pepper Fiesta will feature strolling Mariachis, Ray Santiago and His Salsa Orchestra -- complete with brass horns -- Thai, Peruvian and South American Highland music and dance performances, and Latin American handicrafts. Special events for children include a puppet show, folktales and a chance to plant their very own pepper plants to take home. There will even be a chili pepper art exhibit by Marcy Wasserman, presented in the tradition of the Spanish Bodega paintings of Velazquez and Zurbaran. Who could ask for more? Well, there is more! Want to see the diversity of this fiery fruit? Then join BBG's own Dr. Pepper, chili pepper curator Douglas Dudgeon, on a tour of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's impressive Chili Pepper Collection. To highlight that special spark that comes from the chili pepper, foods of Thailand and India will be featured in cooking demonstrations, as chefs prepare the food, offer samples and share their secret recipes.
