Sandy,
Use two cans (I like Goya) drained of all liquid.  Otherwise, go as directed.
Once or twice I've cooked my own dried garbanzos and then toasted them in a 
skillet.  Don't do that unless you want a hummus that tastes like peanut 
butter.
