The wife and I hit the Italian Market in Philly yesterday.I went past a produce stand that had boxes of chiles marked Habaneros. When I looked in the box, they were a beautiful chocolate color. They were selling for $2 a pound and I figured that I would get some before I left. After picking up all sorts of goodies and when heading back to the truck, we stopped at that stand only to find that what was on display was the tiny ones that went to the bottom of the box. I felt these were too much trouble to work with and started rummaging around the stand for a substitute. I found 1/2 bushel boxes of them for $10. Sold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I got home, I weighed them out and I got just over 8 pounds making them $1.25 a pound. I am hauling extras into my CH friends at church today and will probably fire up the smoker to make some "special" ones. More chocolate habs than I ever imagined!
