Okay, here's a non-circuitous answer then: I scarify my morning glory seeds to help them sprout. Instead of trying to do this with a knife without cutting myself...not so easy even though they are fairly large seeds...I use the edge of a nail file or emery board to gently file down the seed coat in one spot so the sprout can "break out" of the hard coating easier. Works like a charm.
