Why ASSume that the study was funded by taxes?  Even if tax money was
involved though, one can think of numerous benefits and
consequences--alleviating pain for the ill, for one thing.

Think what the consequences of Queen Isabella telling Columbus (as the
Italians did) that a transoceanic voyage would be a waste of tax dollars:
Europe would have gone no one knows how many more years without Chiles!?
And Montezuma might have ended up discovery and conquering the Old World.
