Stress the Plants, Whip them ??
Quizical look on Mark's face??

Old English Saying:
A woman a Dog and a Walnut tree,
A beating for, the better off they be..

Beating a tree [bark] with sticks causes it to set fruit, and will
probably cause the fruit to ripen earlier if green..

Plant speak [ Oh *(^@! "i'm dying", got to get the seed out]..
[of course one has to be gentler with a Chile plant than most of the
aforementioned]..

Give them no water
[hard to do in eastern Oz due to the prevailing weather pattern]
If potted, face them north and put Alfoil behind them
If ground based place a cover over them protecting them from rain and
Alfoil behind them.
You could try putting Banana skins under them as these give off Ethelyne
gas [naturally] which is what the Banana farmers here in Coffs Harbour
and Qld use in the packing sheds to speed the ripening process.
You can hasten the ripening of Avocados by placing them in a brown paper
bag with ripe Bananas..
Probably not viable for the home gardener unless he has unrestricted
access to a University's chemical lab..
I'll ask one of the local Banana farmers in the next couple of days and
get back to the list..
"BEWARE OF FRUIT FLY THOUGH"
..
The season this year has been dismal with slow ripening due to the mild
summer and semi constant rain. Some of my Chiles here in Coffs are still
flowering and setting their first fruit, as i'm coastal, i may be able
to prolong the season with some creative alfoiling and a semi greenhouse
out of plastic and electrical conduit..
