An article in the New York Times science section reports: "..scientists in India have made the intriguing discovery that certain spices can prevent bacteria from being destroyed by radiation. The researchers, reporting in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, found that chili powder offered E. coli and other bacteria the best protection against gamma rays, followed by black pepper and turmeric. Antioxidants and perhaps other compounds in the spices were found to help protect the bacterial DNA from damage. " I think I should be pretty well protected from them pesky gamma rays. So next time your out with someone and they start complaining about their DNA mutating because of the G-rays whip a couple of Red Savinas at them. Hey maybe that's why we are knuckledraggers - through the centuries our ancestors were Chile Heads and their genes never evolved due to mutation because of gamma rays. It could happen...
