Tara, I now wash all my mushrooms. I got permission <grin> from Jaques Pepin on a TV cooking show. He said all you need to do is wash them quickly and immediately before using rather than earlier, that way they don't have time to get mushy from soaking up water. Depending on what I'm doing with them, I may or may not dry them before I toss them in the dish. I find absolutely no difference in them in flavor or texture or cooking time from ones that have just been brushed clean and I feel much better knowing I'm not eating grit or who knows what. You now have permission to wash yours, too.
