It is a frustrating year for tomatillo growers in some parts, but most of the consensus in the list is that they grow like weeds as volunteers from last year's fallen fruit. This is surely my experience. Mike Bowers's experience in dry Davis, CA is that they grow well there, but he was not able to tell how the plants would do in a humid environment. St. Louis in summer is about as humid as it can get at times and tomatillos certainly grow very well here. They do start out somewhat spindly with very shallow roots, it seems, but they grow rapidly and set lots of fruit in hot weather. Those with spindly plants appear to be in New England where the weather has been cooler than normal recently. Hang in there, they will overwhelm the garden when it gets warmer!
