WASHINGTON -- Attorney General Janet Reno said Thursday that she is looking
into the FBI's new high-tech "Carnivore" system, for email monitoring to
ensure that privacy safeguards are met as well as the needs of federal law
enforcement officials.

The "Carnivore" system, when placed on an Internet service provider, scans
emails for messages associated with the target of a criminal investigation.
