Hi fellow-chile heads, First, let me say my husband and I have enjoyed the chile-head messages since we signed up in late July. Some of the messages are very entertaining and provide a good laugh after a long day at the office and others are very informative. The knowledge and networking among this group is impressive. It is your expertise we humbly seek in the propagation and care of our beloved Capsicum. We are new to growing hot peppers in our backyard in Cincinnati, OH (we moved here 3 years ago). This year we are growing super cayenne II, super chili, early jalapeno, red habanero, carribean red habanero and haitian purple. The super chilis and haitian purples are doing well. But, we only got about 5 super cayennes and 8-10 early jalapenos. Since we are disappointed in the productivity of these two types, do the chile-heads (particularly those living in the midwest) have any suggestions on what other types do well in the crazy spring/summer weather of the midwest. As for the habaneros, they have a lot of blooms, but only two peppers. I realize the habaneros have a long maturation and I suspect they are going to come in all at the same time. Is my suspicion correct? Or should we even bother growing habs next year? My husband says don't bother with 'em and I say they are a classic - what is a hot chili pepper garden without habaneros.
