I was cruising Graeme Castleton's chiles database the other day, and, intrigued by an ornamental, noticed a link for more information and clicked on it. An email box came up, with the address right here at the University of Sydney. This got me really intrigued, so I sent off an enquiry and it turns out that the University of Sydney has a chile pepper breeding program! Right now they are concentrating on breeding a type of paprika suitable for commercial production in Australian conditions. The whole plant breeding program of the university is conducted over 1300 Acres, on the outskirts of town. The professor involved rang me today (apparently he was equally intrigued at finding a fellow chilehead at the University) and has invited me to go out and view their operation. So I have made plans to go out in January, when the pods are at their best. I'm really looking forward to this! I've been toying with the idea of trying my own cross-breeding program starting next year, just to see what will come up, so this will be a nice chance to see how the professionals go about it.
