Red jalapenos can be deceptive.  Since they are so much sweeter than the mature green ones, the heat is masked for a short period by the sugar. Of course, if you are a masochistic individual, such as myself and my friend Jeff, you will go to Jim's Open Field's event and while picking peppers you will be eating those monster sized red jalapenos like candy.  One of the camera guys there said we looked like a couple of kids picking berries (pick one, eat one..) Ok, I have to stop thinking about that, because now I need another one of those red beauties.  :^)
