Hi, 

I have heard this tale of woe many times from several news groups.

I use a second hard drive, and  "xxcopy" to make the second an identical HD clone as backup.  This backup HD is even bootable -- just in case my primary HD completely goes up in smoke some day.  Then one doesn't have to "shoot" oneself.
