The outer branches die and the rot very slowly goes to the main trunk of the plant. The stems lose leaves and get a dark rotten withered look to them eventually dieing.. I tried cutting off the affected sections and was unsuccesful in saving the plants.. Varieties I have had exibit this problem were Chinese, Bactum and to a lesser extent Pubescens.. I have my own thoughts about this as most of the Chiles affected were in a small shade house on the Eastern wall of my house.. I think the problem is probably fungal, our winter up here was pretty dry, so that probably blows my theory out of the water.. I have some plants that are showing signs of this problem and am experimenting with a Bourdeaux/mild bleach spray.. If I have Dieback on other Chiles (Annums mainly)the stems stay woody and relatively dry and when pruned seem to survive (they look terrible but they do survive).. I think that overwatering probably contributes to the problem, as I wrote earlier we did have a dry winter and I did keep the water up to the Chiles.. Chiles in the ground do not seem to be affected as yet.. Luke in Oz Our business in life is not to succeed but to continue to fail in high spirits. ~ ~ ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON
