I haven't been to San Antonio in at least eight years, but here is what I recall: San Antonio Pioneer Mills cafe & bakery. It's at one end of the Riverwalk. Sinfully luscious breakfasts, lunches, Sunday brunch, and sweet stuff. Bring your own heat. The best tortillas I got were at a tiny roadside stand in a square in town. It was near an instrumental music store. They were marinated napolitas and the tortillas shells were made by the woman, too. Cheap, about .69 for a big one. Get chiles at El Mercado. Freshest chile powder I ever bought. Market Day is Sunday mornings. Lots of shops, too. Riviera's Chile Shop has all things chile related. Chile gift stuff can be bought at other stores, too. Shop around, as it is a touristy area. Bargains can be found. For great smokehouse food trek to New Braunfels Smokehouse in New Braunfels. I highly recommend the buckwheat pancakes, fragrant smoked ham and crispy, salty bacon. Wonder how chipotles would work with that? New Braunfels may be an hour out of town, not even that. A little bit past Reptile World and not near Austin. Make sure you stop at a big grocery store for wonderful Mexican stuff. I remember seeing huge packages of red pepper tortillas. Next time I go I will make room in the suitcase to bring one home. Enjoy! Karen
