Coming out of perpetual lurkdom to offer info. on this one. Last year was the first year I *didn't* grow all my chiles in pots. Very disappointing. For the past 12 yrs. I've grown them only in pots and have had extremely good results: healthy plants, minimum blossom drop, good fruit set, and good harvest (for my climate, that is). I usually use a 10-gal. pot and plant 2-3 plants in each. The advantage of the pot is that the soil gets warmer quicker and I can turn the pot to maximize sun exposure. Plus, if it gets a bit chilly at night, I can move them to a more secluded/protected place til it warms up. I generally grow habs, Thai dragons, serranos, chiltipin, jalapenos, etc. Pretty mainstream, but I like the powdered mixture I get from the dried chiles. Just my experience.
