None of my chile books say anything except that they went back to europe with Columbus and spread from there. Jean Andrews in Peppers, The Domesticated Capsicums has them in Spain in 1493, Italy by 1535, Germany by 1542, Balkans before 1569, and Moravia by 1585. The Portugese brought them to Africa and India by 1498 and three races were recognized in India by 1542. It did not reach eastern North America until 1621. Interesting stuff!
