The device they are discussing is a hinged metal sandwich container 
(sometimes Teflon coated)in which slices of bread are placed buttered 
side out. Imagine a big metal clam shell. The filling can be just 
about anything you can think of. The whole point is that when the two 
halves of the sandwich container are clamped shut, the edges of the 
sandwich are crimped to seal in the filling while cooking. Some are 
electrically heated and some may be used over a gas flame or camp 
fire.
