I have to add my 2 US cents in on the side of Lord Byron.  I have been
using underground soaker hoses for my 1400 sq ft garden for the last 10
years.  Bought 500 ft from a wholesale nursery supply catalog and have
reused them without problems.  In our hot Nebraska summers I pray for
hot dry weather.  My plants are watered from below and need only
infrequent watering.  I lay down a 3 or 4 inch layer of grass clippings
and weeds don't have a chance.  L.B. is right about the added work up
front but I have a system down using a grape hoe to dig the trenches
after tilling which works well.
