Mike is probably right about the hab, but I've grown a cayenne, successfully, in a small pot (five inches dia.), while it may not have been fair to the cayenne, it did produce super chilies throughout the summer on my deck and that was after wintering indoors. About the basil, they are so super easy to grow from seed that I'd recommend your going and getting a packet of seeds and have successive planting regardless of the plant your folks brought you, Jonathan. I have a lot growing on my deck (haven't quite started in the garden yet) and a couple seedlings growing in somewhat poor lighting in my kitchen. Basil will not be denied! <g> You do have to be careful about overwatering it, however. It is a Mediterranean plant and used to drier climes.
