Been an interesting morning to say the least. GNS called to inform me that they are not growing the Savina(tm) this year due to the CA energy crisis. Their dehydrator folks told them to expect a four-fold increase in costs and that, coupled with increased fuel & labor costs, has put them out of growing business for this year. I don't know if that is good or bad news for me yet. It means that my Savina(tm) has tripled in value overnight, but it also means I am now working without a safety net should I have crop failure. It is also way too late for me to plant additional, provided I can even get THIS years crop in the ground! Gotta love this business- the whole world turns upside down in the space of a phone call. Reminds me of my 'real job' at the firehouse :-) Food Distribution Magazine awards are posted now as well. In addition to CaJohn taking his usual batch of 1sts & 2nds, my UnBEARable took first in the 'insane' catagory. :-) As long as I am treading the line on commercialism here, by the end of the week I should have the "Open Fields" posters for sale. With the incalculable help of Jeff S and Brad E from the list, I've got a poster commemorating this years open fields event. A URL will appear shortly. The proceeds from the sale go to help defray the costs of the event with any and ALL profits going to the Local 416 Firefighters' Burn Camp. Even if you can't be there this year, it is a way to make sure that those who are able to attend stay dry, have a place to potty that isn't a 5 mile drive, get lots of goodies, and helps to send burned kids to a summer camp with others just like themsleves. Off to a 48 hour shift at the firehouse and then shuttling plants to the fields for planting! -Jim C Mild to Wild
