I decided to make these in the crockpot and boy was I happy I did.

As a great garnish, I sauteed some slivered habanero and put it on top. It
was soooo good. Karen let me pick a couple from her plant on Saturday. Boy
did it pack a nice punch! Great chile! Made this bowl of beans!

   2 tsp sugar

Place all ingredients in crockpot except for the sugar, vinegar, water,
olive oil and salt. Cook on LOW for 4 hours.

Saute habanero in cooking spray until lightly browned (do this with the oven
fan on or an open window). Add to crockpot, along with the vinegar, water
and sugar. Cook on LOW for another hour.

To serve: place some white rice in the bottom of each bowl. Top with some of
the black beans. Drizzle with some olive oil and sprinkle with salt.

NOTES : Risa's notes:

* Doug Irvine sent me a package of this stuff called Garlic Diablo. It is a
dried spice mix. If you don't live in Canada, and you can't get your hands
on the stuff, omit it or use garlic powder and a bit of cayenne pepper.
