I lack a yard/garden so I am limited to containers too. I generally water
the plants well and let them rest indoors in good sunlight for two or
three days, then transplant into larger containers and water again.
I fertilize them the third time I water them. This is more intuitive
than scientific but it seems to work.

Jim,
as it was hot and dry and I was hot and nrevous, I ended up putting them in
the ground after all. I figured if they can survive the summer, they'll be
strong enough to move before winter.
The verdict is still out as its been brutlly hot and humid all week. I
worry about overwatering vs not enough to fix their stress...
after almost a week, i 've got (the same #) GREAT looking chiles but
yellow, weak looking plants...
we'll see what happens if it finally rains tonight...
the tomato, btw, looks great!
no matter what, its not a loss! thanks for getting back to me!!!
