I also planted California Wonders this year but had very different results, thankfully I planted only one. I got more green peppers off of one plant than I could use, the damned thing grew to the size of my tomatoe plants! This is after I trimmed it back in mid-summer so it wouldn't take over the whole area! I planted in an area of my garden that has been unused for 2-3 years, perhaps this is the big difference since you are growing in community plots and the soil may be missing an essential element from over use. I live in Chillicothe, Ohio less than 200mi. from you and like you have very clay soil, given our close proximity I wouldn't guess your problems were weather related. I also planted relatively late, the third week in May. By the way, no chance of an anti-bell rant from me, they are the perfect edible container for meals like boiled egg and bread crumb stuffed peppers, of course liberally slathered with Brother Jim's Red Savina Garlic sauce!!YUM YUM! On another growing note, I had a surprise with some cayennes this year. I had a notion to grow 20 or so plants to get cayennes for stringing into ristas for my friends and to make a little sauce. I started from seed in March and battled the cats from then on (I have three cats, a parting shot from my last ex-wife-and-or-girlfriend!). By the time it came to plant them outside I had 10 beaten and chewed scraggly candidates. I was so disgusted with the adventure I stuck them in an unused flower bed alongside my house that I prepared by hosing all the weeds with Roundup and simply turning the soil with a shovel. Damn if they didn't take off like gangbusters! They are still setting fruit, who'd a thunk it?
