Beans are great in chili. If you like them then add them. If you don't then leave them out or serve them on the side. There is no strict definition of what chili is and what can and can't be included. Just like with pizza, there is no one definition of what "real" pizza is and what you're allowed to use as a topping. I've heard that "real" Texas style chile doesn't have any tomatoes or beans in it. Sounds reasonable to me but there are others that will disagree. Texas isn't the one and only style of chili that is valid, unless you listen to a chili snob who's definition is the only one that matters. Eat what you like and don't worry about what the food police have to say about it.
