Roughly true. Of course, I remember being taught that a little nearer to 4th
grade, than the blurry college days <g>. Pepper was also a good
preservative, but I haven't really heard of chile peppers being used for the
same. Could be one reason they didn't catch on well. Mostly, tho, chiles,
tomatoes and eggplant were widely regarded as somewhat poisonous for a time,
with acceptance catching on later. And chocolate was regarded a worthless
discovery, since the main way it was imbibed at the time was as a bitter,
chile-seasoned drink.

ps. quiet on the "gateway" stuff. They'll start outlawing growing your own
chile's next. After all, the endorphins produced by consuming the hot stuff
are nature's own opiates.
