Ja, Carlinville is my county seat. Not one of the round Old Fashioned
half-gallons. This came in a half-gallon box. I got it at a
family-owned grocery here in town, Meehan's. I think they have a
couple more stores in the area, like Roodhouse and elsewhere I can't
recall at the moment.

Well, we know you're not from Standard City. They've a lot of saloons
but, no grocery stores.

So true, Great American Outback. My walkabout consists of wandering
the bi-state area looking for exotic edibles and fine art outlets.
I've got vacation coming up next week. Can you recommend anything new
up your way? I have a chilehead friend who lives there, but he's been
busy building and trimming out his new house and hasn't bothered
searching the sprawl of Springfield. Any new Asian or African
places? My last good dinner was either at Pho Grand (killer spring
rolls and iced coffee) in STL or the Ethiopian place in U-City, Red
Lion. It's been too long!

I can recommend Gateway to India at 3115 Chatham Road (217-726-6890) both
for their dinner selections and for their buffet during the week and the
Champagne Brunch on weekends which features the all-u-can-eat buffet plus
all the beer, wine, champagne, coctails and exotic juices you can swill down
your throat. I've only done the weekday buffet and the night-time dinners.
Someday when I have a designated driver I'll tackle the weekend deal.
The cuisine is pretty typical. The curries don't light you up. But some of
the Goanese dishes can make your eyelids sweat. They have a tandoor and know
how to use it.

Also, Thai Kitchen on North 9th Street just past St. John's hospital.
Excellent Thai and they will do Thai hot if you ask. If they try to fake you
out as they did me on my first visit there are containers of ground red
chile on each table with decent sized spoons for distributing it. After the
waitress witnessed me adding heat to my Garlic Pepper Pork she brought me
the real thing the next time. <GGG>

They have both lunch and dinner menus. The lunches are quite reasonable and
very tasty.

ENJOY!!!
