Great idea -- as usual, as my wife says the recipe was a suggestion, and I went from there. I didn't have any ham hocks or bacon, (but with four teenage sons that eat truckloads of sandwiches) but we usually have a loaf type ham in the 'fridge, so I sauteed onion, peppers, ham and spices(cumin, salt, pepper, chile powder), added them to the blackeyed peas, tossed in a little garlic and chives and poured this in with some tomatoes and two cans of black-eyed peas. Heated everything through in the oven while I grilled some steaks. Great grub, I think it would go great with fresh pinto beans as well, will have to stop in a field or two this week and pick some fresh pintos, they are just getting to the striped pod stage and should be really good.
