Salut Chileheads

Greetings from Luxembourg where my wife, Frances, and
I have been living for 11 years and where I work in
Approach Radar Control at LUX. Over the last six
years I've managed to grow a few chiles on our small,
south facing balcony, mainly jals, cayennes and Apache
F1s, mostly bought as seedlings.

Last year I planted a bunch of seeds I received from
the Asian Veg RDC forgetting that they were 3 years
old and had spent two summers in a hot (100°F)
conservatory. Needless to say the germination rate
was negligible but I did end up with one plant to
overwinter, a hab of possibly Central American origin.
This survived on the watery winter sunlight until
March when it suddenly exploded into life with a lot
of foliage growth, then blossoms and a few fruit, an
orange hab similar to those on the front cover of the
Fiery Foods & BBQ mag. When I started to harden it
off a lot of blossom drop followed but this was
replaced and at least 100 fruits have now set, mainly
the size of a large pea. Heat level is typical hab.
Other plants this year are jals, Apache F1, Cheyenne
F1 (a new one to me bought as a seedling in UK),
Hungarian Black, NuMex extra hot and Antilles. These
are seeds I saved from the only hot pepper available
here from the supermarket, described as an Antilles
pepper and being pretty much identical to a Caribbean
red hab. Not making much progress are 3 red Savinas,
prob due to the fact that our night time temps do not
get above 70°F, despite this, allegedly, being the
height of summer.

Fortunately bugs are not a major prob, white- and
green-fly being kept under control with a
garlic/onion/chile/dishsoap mixture, just have to
remember not to stand downwind of when
spraying.Talking of bugs, I know a couple of 'burgers,
keen gardeners, who swear by a small piece of copper
wire inserted through the stems of tomato seedlings to
keep the plant bug free all season. I was wondering
if that would work for chiles seeing as they're both
members of the Solanacea family.

Regards to all

Roy
