As I watched the ceremony on TV, winds from Hurricane Gustav blew waves of dust across the former World Trade Center site. Dust clouds, reminders of the fall of the Towers or, as one person said, the thousands no longer with us telling us they are with us today. When the Pentagon service was broadcast about two hours ago, President Bush mentioned the people on the planes. It was then I realized, especially since I live under the main arrival route for Newark Liberty Airport, no planes have flown over. Nothing, not even military jets. Newark, where the flight that crashed in PA departed from, is almost shut down. The other two major airports, La Guardia and Kennedy in NYC, are largely closed. All the military jets are flying over NYC and Washington, DC. The Vice President in the bunker because of the major terrorist threats received today. At 11AM today it was eerily quiet, as it was exactly one year ago at this time when the FAA shut down all flights. As it was a year ago, the birds sang and crickets chirped. Any sirens sounded so eery. NYC burned in a huge plume of smoke on the horizon. It's now 1:30 and the planes have begun again. With loud roars as they drop altitude, they bank around and descend into Newark. I am attending the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Verdi's Requiem program at Liberty State Park in Jersey City tonight. The park is directly across the river from Lower Manhatten. I will see the lights come on in NYC during the show. There will be many dignitaries present (in fact, even President Bush could show up) at tonights NJSO concert. It will be beautiful. I hope that there is a public competition for Memorial designs as there was with The Pentagon. Many of us have ideas to share. In the meantime, I share them with you. "http://members.skyweb.~kstober/wtc.htm". There are four very long pages. And I have updates to add - from a friend in Jerusalem, Israel, who lost friends in suicide bombings and sometimes can't even go to work because he might get blown up, and a reader of the September 11 Photo Project from Edmonton, CA. BTW, one good thing about being unemployed is that I no longer drive down Warrenville Hill everyday, staring at the skyline of NYC missing it's "two finger salute". May all who are lost rest in peace and those that live, live each day as best they can. Sincerely Karen kstober@skyweb.net http://members.skyweb.net/~kstober/
