This is about the time of year when the chile plants I'm over wintering start to get infested with aphids. So far I haven't done anything except spray the foliage once with pyrethrum. In past years I've used pyrethrum and soap sprays with little success. The next time I water I'm going to try using garlic. I read about this in the summer 2002 issue of The Chile Pepper Institute Newsletter. According to the newsletter, there is a book titled "Common-Sense Pest Control" by Olkowski and Daar, that suggests using an aqueous solution of garlic powder. One teaspoon of garlic powder per 3 cups of water was poured into the soil (not on the foliage) and the aphid problem was cured in tow days. They also note that this will kill beneficial insects like ladybugs as well. If this works, I'm going to try putting garlic powder in my seed starting mix as well. If it doesn't work, the only hope will be the Elohim aliens. Since they created aphids and all other life on Earth, I'm sure they could help us with controlling aphids. All we need to do is build an embassy for them as described by the Raelian Revolution, and they surely would come.
