Local Big Y sooper markets are holding one of their "Buy 1 get 2 Free" sales this weekend. Went there today to stock up on roasting chickens, ham steaks and country ribs among other things. In any event, whilst there, I checked out the produce and they had a really nice selection of chiles including yellow habs, fresnos, serranos, jalapenos, yellow wax, cherries, and some kinda unlabeled red thingy that looked like a cayenne or d'arbol. Plus a selection of the not-so-hot frying and stuffing peppers like anaheims (and bells too of course). In the meat department they had genuwine chili grind beef, 'bout 3/8 to 1/2 inch, insteada the usual pasty cat food grind. This in Connecticut where where finding real chiles and chili beef at the same time is roughly the equivalent of finding a good cheap beer and an honest politician at the same time. This was at the Plainville store but Big Y is usually pretty consistent so I image the other stores have similar stocks. The celebratory chili batch came out well (I tossed in the prime rib scraps from New Year's and a healthy dose of Br'er Jim's ground chipotle) with chili beans and "spanish" rice on the side. I've been playing around with the bean and rice recipes and they're 'bout ready to post. I'll do that separately.
