David, There are probably 50-75 different varieties of Jalapeno peppers. Most, if not all of the peppers you buy from local greenhouses and super markets are probably open pollenated varieties, because the seed is cheap. The latest, state of the art hybrids can go for up to .02 per seed, especially some of the new disease resistant bell peppers hybrids.
