Once upon a time, Organic Gardening was great. Now it's a collection of sound-bites, and not all of them are any good. I just received a "free gift" from them, a "Little Book of Garden Secrets." In the centerfold, there's a one-paragraph sound bite (really just an ad for subscribing to their magazine) with a headline, "Pest-Proof Your Veggies the Natural Way." It's illustrated by a chile on a string next to a Colorado potato beetle. I know, and you know, you can grind up hot chiles in a blender with some water, strain out chunks and spray it on insects to kill them with Capsaicin. This half-page would have been a good idea, if only they hadn't labeled the chile "paprika," and in the text recommended use of McCormick™ ground red pepper for the spray. Sheesh! Margaret L
