Well, enough people have described the dauber wasps enough for me to go back and take a closer look. (Peter, thanks especially for the really useful sites!) Yes, they are a "they," and I got up the courage to look closely enough to see that they are paper wasps; I was mistaken in my original assessment. This is not surprising (that they are paper wasps or yellow jackets, not my assessment), since they are common around our house. These guys are nastier. Being paper, rael's technique will work even better, but does this change the recommended approach? So far, I have not seen them molesting the peppers, which they are close to. -s
